Our vision for our people is to create an environment where people can excel and where they maximise their potential and opportunity.
We believe that our culture should be unique to everyone and we commit to being consistent in treating people individually.
Our people are also unique – our recipe for success lies in the diversity of our workforce who have PhDs, graduates, people with life sciences experience, others from totally different career backgrounds and some with no qualifications. Lots of nationalities are represented among staff and there is a good mixture of male / female balance all of whom bring something different to the team. There is no SMI ‘type’.We believe that all situations are different and the skills should match the situation. Our people need to be bold enough to lead and secure enough to follow as each situation dictates.
Due to the challenging and fast paced environment we support all individuals using various tools & techniques, for example;
4 day residential personal development program
WHAM (What & How About Me)

WOW Factors
We want our organisation to be clearly different and we constantly affirm that it's not only WHAT we do, it's also HOW we do it.
So, what does that mean in real life?
That's a question all of us wanted answered, so in the second part of 2005 the whole company started working on a process to identify what the 'how' was that we all expected.
We decided it was all about behaviours so we looked at those we thought would make us successful and clearly different. These became our “WOW factors” (how we WOW ourselves and others). The whole organisation bought into these and we bring all of our new people up to speed during our 'Brilliance at Work' programme.
We receive feedback on how we perform against our WOW factors during our ‘WHAM process’ (What and How About Me) – this is in addition to 'in the moment' feedback.
The details of what we are committing to are below - imagine having the experience of working in this environment every day.
WOW!
Trust and be Trusted
“Trust is empowerment through belief in people and others.”
Trust is the ability for me to let go and have confidence in others with the belief that they have confidence in me.
At SMI I am trusted. Everyone believes in me and has the confidence that I do everything to the best of my abilities. I am supported to make the best decisions and develop myself. I know I am trusted by the behaviours of my colleagues and the policies that we have in place.
Self management, choosing your holidays, signing off your expenditures and working flexible hours are only some of the examples of trust in practice.
I know that by trusting myself and others I can WOW the world!
Go invent
“Having the vision to expand current knowledge to realise new ideas that improve lives.”
Innovation is integral to our name and everyday life at SMI. As part of the team I have the freedom to expand my mind and to develop new ideas and concepts that make a real difference to peoples lives.
At SMI we seek each other out to share and build ideas. Communication and collaboration between groups is the norm. I am creative and share ideas and knowledge with the team. The realisation of these concepts will be core to achieving our vision of delivering ground breaking home cardio solutions to the market.
Enjoy
“Having that Friday feeling everyday.”
Enjoyment for SMI is the buzz I get from achieving my goals when I am energised and motivated. Through our flexible approach to work and life, I can find that balance that best suits and enables me to deliver my goals. Social events, having a laugh, celebrating, taking time to play and building cathedrals are the norm. A positive encouraging atmosphere gives me the ability to reach beyond my goals and fills me with a sense of achievement and success.
Be Courageous
“Feel the fear and do it anyway.”
At SMI I have the freedom of mind and spirit, to face fear with confidence and resolution.
At SMI we have a culture which promotes:
- Personal Courage
- Holding myself accountable for my actions and stepping out of my comfort zone
- The courage to act independently, ask for help when needed and make decisions without fear of making mistakes and to feel safe during times of uncertainty
- Leadership Courage
- Based on honesty the freedom to speak my own mind and the willingness to break the mould for the benefit of the company
